Acromo-clavicular, stem cell orthopedic

Although stem cell therapy procedures have been in use for quite some time, modern advances in medical equipment and procurement methods have allowed the collection of stem cells to be performed quickly and inexpensively, usually in a simple outpatient procedure. Dr. Purita is an expert in this procedure, and can perform it right in his offices at The Institute of Regenerative and Molecular Orthopedics in Boca Raton.

Stem cells are considered the "repairmen" of the body. These amazing little cells are most often associated with tissue repair and travel to injured areas of the body in the bloodstream. Certain areas of the body have a poor blood supply and are considered "hypoxic". Among other things, this means that stem cells will have a hard time reaching these areas. Through stem cell collection and reintroduction into the body, the cells can be directed to the specific areas that they are needed.

At The Institute of Regenerative and Molecular Orthopedics, Dr. Purita will aspirate about 2oz. of bone marrow from the patient's pelvis. The bone marrow is then spun in a high speed centrifuge which separates the stem cells and platelets from the other blood products. This concentration of platelets and stem cells is called "bone marrow aspiration concentrate" or BMAC and is what is injected back into the patient's body.

The stem cells on their own do not know what to repair, which is where the platelets come into play. The platelets "direct" the stem cells, telling them what type of cell to become, and what type of repair is needed.

Although the tissue repairs possible with stem cell orthopedic procedures are amazing, they are not instantaneous. The entire tissue repair process can take up to two or three months to complete, but improvement in usually evident sooner. About four to six weeks after the initial stem cell injection, patients will have an additional platelet rich plasma injection to the injured part of the body. The platelet rich environment ensures that the stem cells in the affected area can continue growing and multiplying, to speed recovery.
